Best Bets 18th July 2020

Saturday racing lobs again, and there are a whole bunch of meetings taking place around the country today, with some really competitive racing to be run and won. There’s listed racing at Ipswich, with the Eye Liner Stakes over 1200m, meanwhile racing returns to HQ at Flemington down in Melbourne, and the inner Kensington track gets a rare run on a Saturday at Randwick. Metropolitan meetings also from Morphettville and Belmont, so take a look at PlayUp form analyst Lewis Willoughby’s top five picks of the day.

Flemington R2 #6 Wilmot Pass $5.50 at PlayUp – Enticed by the current price on offer for this Freedman galloper, who comes here second up off the back of a very big effort when racing fresh at Caulfield over 1000m. He was heavily backed in the closing stages, eventually jumping as a $4.60 favourite, he was then hard ridden and about 6L off the second last horse in running completely detached, flew home and grabbed fourth on the line, and encountered some traffic in the straight as well. Fitter and better for the run now, and out to 1200m really suits. He deserves to be closer in the market to Proper Rogue. Selections: 6-4-1-3

Flemington R3 #1 Alcyone $1.90 at PlayUp – Not usually a fan of tipping horses at this short quote, but Alcyone out of the Godolphin camp looks undoubtedly the bet of the day, Was very good last start behind Cherry Tortoni, fighting back hard on the line to make a real race of it. Peak fit now into his first racing campaign, out to 1800m will really suit. He will be back in the field with cover away from the headwind, and should be able to unleash down the outside when needed. Should be very hard to beat here I’d think. Selections: 1-3-2-5

Flemington R9 #7 Indian Thunder $26.00 at PlayUp – Angling for a bit of value here in the last race of the day, with Indian Thunder who comes here second up off a very pleasing fresh effort down the straight last start. He managed to clock some very quick closing sectionals for the day, which is enhanced by the fact that he did not have any first up form to speak of. That tells me he has returned in great order this prep, and should be really suited sticking to the straight track at Flemington, and coming out to 1200m. He also will be able to find the best going out wide from barrier 17, and he holds weight sticking to equal grade. Each way all day. Selections: 7-17-8-10

Randwick Kensington R3 #7 Willowheart $13.00 at PlayUp – Something each way here will do at a bit of a price, this Waller filly comes here first up and looked strong in a recent trial over 900m at Rosehill. She has an unbeaten fresh record of 2:2-0-0, which includes a win on debut over the talented Starla, and a win last prep fresh in similar heavy conditions. She may be able to find better going in the straight from the wide draw, and looks well weighted with the 56.5kg for Avdulla. I can’t let her go around at that price without something on. Selections: 7-3-2-1

Randwick Kensington R6 #5 Spencer $9.00 at PlayUp – Another one here on the program who could be going around at a longer price than he should be, Spencer comes here fifth up into the preparation and is sure to be rock hard fit for this assignment. Disregarding last start, his previous two runs at Randwick and Rosehill in heavy conditions were very sound, and it tells me that he is able to handle the wet going really well. Sticking to the 1400m suits, and looks to map very well in the run from barrier three. At the current price, you could easily have an each way bet here. Selections: 5-4-1-3
