Two heats of the 715 metre Newcastle Cup at The Gardens is the highlight of racing tonight around the country, and two very strong heats they are.
In the first heat, the Group 1 winning stayer Just Terms returns to NSW racing following her unplaced run at Sandown last week in the Bold Trease. She had some support in that event but we felt her run was somewhat disappointing, and we feel the local greyhound trained by Mark Davidson, Let’s See, can get the major prize in this hear.
Here’s Tears, recent winner of the Sydney Cup at Wentworth Park, is drawn to perfection in box one in heat 2, and he should be able to pounce straight on the bunny. The question mark dog in this heat is Zipping Truvy. She has been disappointing her last couple of starts at Dapto, dropping out early and not running home with her usual zest. But this is her home track, and at the odds she is our selection, on an each way basis.
Tomorrow night at Ballarat we have the running of heats of the Group 2 Ballarat Cup, and all eyes will focus on the Jason Thompson trained Pirate Pete who broke Shima Shine’s track record here last start.
The Gardens Race 10 No 4 Blue Bronte $1.24 at PlayUp – An absolute lidpinger who has recorded 26 victories from 34 starts over short courses across the state. The odds are not flash but the race is worth watching just to see her start. Yes. Selections: 4-8-1-7.
Richmond Race 4 No 8 Timeless Moment $2.45 at PlayUp – In the very strong John Finn kennels and this is her box we believe. Recently returned from a 4 month break to win well over the 400 metres here, and she will appreciate this extra distance tonight. Selections: 8-1-7-4.
Geelong Race 4 No 1 War Widow $1.65 at PlayUp – Breath-taking last start at Ballarat when she spread-eagled the field, albeit a very moderate lot. But t was the manner she did it that was impressive. Jumping fast and running super quick splits, and a repeat performance will see her winning again. Selections: 1-8-4-2.
Geelong Race 5 No 1 Zen Prince $2.30 at PlayUp – Former star galloper who suffered what looked like a career ending injury some 8 months ago. Returned to the track last week and despite not finishing in the placings, he did show enough to say a win was not far away. From this box gets his chance. Selections: 1-6-8-2.
Mandurah Race 6 No 1 Mow Keeping Bet Now at PlayUp – Recent arrival in the west from NSW, he has been stunning in his two recent wins here. Should again be able to pounce on the early lead and run away to record another easy victory. Eyes on the clock. Selections: 1-6-8-2.
