The Goodwood: Betting Preview and Tips

Spright heads a 15-horse field for Saturday’s Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville.

After winning the Robert Sangster Stakes, can he go back-to-back the South Australian features?

We take a look at the big sprint.

1. BOOKER ($10.10): She got the perfect run first-up winning a very high-rating Oakleigh Plate (1100m) against Encryption and Eduardo. She ran an ok ninth in the Newmarket Handicap but she didn’t pull up great after that run. She has had 67 days between runs, which is a positive as she is a better horse fresh. She has had two Flemington jumpouts, the last one was good as beat stablemate Smart Coupe under light riding. She will be back from barrier 15 with D.Dunn on.

2. SPRIGHT ($4.01): She finally got her set-up to win last start and powered over the top of her rivals to win the Group One Robert Sangster (1200m) defeating Cool Passion. She ran her last 600m 12.5 lengths above benchmark for a final figure of eight-lengths above benchmark. From barrier 16, she maps to get a similar run to last start and there looks to be enough speed in the race for her to run on. She is a deserved favourite and my top pick.

7. VALOUR ROAD ($8.51): He got the perfect run but still got the job done in a very strong Group Two Euclase Stakes (1200m) last start defeating Tofane. He went 5.7 lengths below benchmark to the 600m and came home 8.6 lengths above benchmark for an overall figure of 2.9 lengths above. He was only 2.8 lengths off Voodoo Lad in the G1 Winterbottom last year. He won’t get the same easy lead as last start and I couldn’t take him at the price.

8. COOL PASSION ($6.01): She was on a tempo that looked fast but was only 2.9 lengths above benchmark to the 600m last start in the G1 Robert Sangster (1200m). She looked the winner at the 150m but was just run down by Spright who unleashed a terrific turn of foot. She maps for an easy time of things just behind the leaders, she will need the gaps in the straight but can win. All things being equal, Spright probably has her measure.

10. ICONOCLASM (($9.01): He was very tough first-up and kept kicking to defeat Miss Vixen at Caulfield. He sat three-wide with no cover and was under the whip at the 300m and was headed by Miss Vixen at the 100m but stuck his neck out and won. He has a figure of 15.7 lengths above benchmark last preparation in the Group One Kennedy Mile and flogged a genuine G1 horse in Widgee Turf at The Valley. Can win.

The Garry Frazer-trained Spright will be looking for consecutive Group One victories and this looks no harder than what she faced in the Robert Sangster a fortnight ago.

She finally got her set-up there last start and she showed her terrific turn of foot to storm over the top of Cool Passion, who will bid to gain revenge.

The Danny O’Brien-trained Iconoclasm was very tough at Caulfield first-up,
Booker got the perfect run first-up winning a very high-rating Oakleigh Plate (1100m).
