Oaks Day and Seppelt Wine Stakes Day round out the Melbourne Cup Carnival for 2019 – terrific racing has had punters flocking to the track so far and crowds are expected to maintain over Thursday and Saturday.
Race 1: Impy is as good as home here, only loss was to Harbour views who is unbeaten and a star. He was hardly disgraced there. While Impy will be too short on his own, the bet of the day is putting Impy into Harbour Views in race 6. Great way to make two short favourites a value friendly bet ($3.65 Playup).
Race 5: Ball of Muscle won this in 2017, was terrific behind Trekking last start who franked that form with a strong third in the Everest. Should be hard to beat here ($2.90 Playup). Soothing deserves forgiveness for last run after facing issues, likes it soft and has the class to win this.
Race 8: Miami Bound was terrific on Saturday defeating some of these ad Damien Oliver on board is always a plus. Wasn’t far behind Warning two starts back and that form has been well franked. One to beat ($3.40 Playup). Vegas Jewel wasn’t far behind Miami Bound last start and is also proven in the wet, will be a danger. No doubt has the class to win this. Moonlight Maid swooped Miami Bound here then chased soul Patch who placed in the Derby Saturday. Will eat 2500m. Gamy another impressive winner who proved best is plenty good enough.
Race 4: Galic Chieftain had no luck running against the pattern in St Leger, will enjoy the wet. True Self was brilliant in the Geelong Cup, Prince of Arran has franked that form. Second run in Oz and he will be fitter for that. One to beat ($2.10 Playup). Carif has been very honest this prep and will be right in this again. Worked hard behind Downdraft last week. Top o the Range scored brilliantly in the Bendigo Cup, flew home late to frank staying ability.
Race 5: Santa Ana Lane returns to defend his crown, has been so unlucky this prep. Swooped against pattern in Everest to just miss after resuming with identical swoop and miss first up behind Sunlight. Surely now is his time, Get on! ($2.10 Playup). Nature Strip was so brave in Everest when drawn against preference, will enjoy the straight and will take plenty of catching. Loves it here- 3 from 3. Loving Gaby was superb winning the Manikato, star 3 year old but will find this harder. Alizee wasn’t far off the Everest despite pattern being against him, is usually good 2nd-up.
Race 6: Amanigiri has been arguably the most popular winner of the spring, punters will be on again. Up in trip but showed the trip shouldn’t be a worry. Worth the price ($8.50 Playup). Rondinella was good last start when just missing out, will feature in the finish here again. Greysful Glamour was brilliant at the Valley, comes up in grade here but is an each-way chance. Fidelia was ok in G1 Saturday, too far back but will enjoy the extra distance and can shock a few.
Race 8: Hartnell will go around for one last time here, always brave and gives everything he has. Almost rude if he doesn’t finish top 3 here. Fifty Stars was superb in Cantala when missing by a nose, loved the wet and if the rain holds in the track he will feature heavily here. Magic Wand was good in the Melbourne Cup, will be much happier with the shorter run here and can back up. Melody Belle won her 7th G1 on the bounce on Oz debut last weekend, was incredible when flashing home and is a bonafide start. Should be too good here ($3.10 Playup). Night’s Watch just cant seem to find the room to run home, hard to trust. Kings Will Dream wasn’t disgraced in the Cox Plate, win before that showed his class.
