Canterbury and Sandown Park give us 15 races to get stuck into for our midweek best bets.
There are seven competitive contests at Canterbury for the Sydney metro racing, and eight Sandown races with plenty of value to be found.
We’ve picked out two horses to back at each venue.
Race 5 shapes as an interesting one and features a number of promising gallopers. The Godolphin contender, TRANSMITTER ($5.50 TopBetta), gets back to a better surface after a series of luckless runs on wet tracks in recent times. She has finished just out of the placings at her last two and never saw daylight in the straight last time when 4th to Black Magnum at Warwick Farm. At her last campaign she had two starts on the Canterbury surface for a 3rd behind Sylvia’s Mother before getting up in this grade. She has drawn to get a nice run from barrier 4 and with Hugh Bowman on board she represents value at the each-way quote.
We close out with a BenchMark 70 and KNOWITALL JACK ($3.40 TopBetta) should be hard to beat. The three-year-old has had four career starts for a win and a couple of minor placings and resumed with a 3rd behind Helga on July 10 at Warwick Farm. On that occasion, the Mark Newnham-trained galloper settled outside the leader but didn’t quite let down in the final 200m. However, he will benefit from that hitout and might get a cushy run on the speed, while the 5kg drop in weight will also help his cause.
The three-year-olds tackle the 1400m journey and WRITE YOUR NAME ($5.00 TopBetta) gets his chance to end what has been a bit of a frustrating run for his backers. The Archie Alexander-trained galloper opened up his career with two early wins and was a certainly beaten late last year the last time he ventured to this track. He was competitive in Saturday class racing in the autumn and resumed with a closing 3rd at Bendigo before not quite handling the Heavy conditions on July 14 at the same track. He should be nearing his peak now and was a winner at his only third up career run. From barrier 5 Jamie Mott has options to lead or take a sit and his mount will go close.
This shapes as a competitive affair and it is CRYPTIC JEWEL ($3.70 TopBetta) that can be the improver back in this grade. The Brent Stanley-trained galloper has had two runs this time in and at her last start she stepped out at Caulfield on July 13. In that race she settled at the tail and was held up at the top of the straight before making up some solid ground late in the piece behind Special Diva, finishing 6th. Prior to that she was a dominant winner in an easier race at Geelong. The four-year-old will just need a bit of luck from the wide gate but looks up to this at her third run this preparation.
