Midweek Best Bets

Midweek metro racing gives us some competitive action at both Canterbury Park and Sandown on Wednesday.

Canterbury have a seven-race program to get our teeth into, while there are eight races to look forward to at Sandown.

We’ve picked out our best bets for each of the venues.

Race 4

This looks to be a nice race in which for AUSTRIA ($3.50 TopBetta) to register her first Australian win since coming over from New Zealand earlier this year. The Chris Waller-trained galloper has been close up in her four runs over here and at her latest start she ran home very impressively from the the back of the field to place behind Loveisli in a BM 70 over the 1900m. She seemed to relish the step up to the distance that day and in a good sign, the two that finished in front of her have since gone on to win and place in a stronger race. She will again get back but there should be enough pace in the race with the likes of Dylan’s Romance and Gypsy Miss likely to push forward.

Race 5

After a couple of big wins in Newcastle to open up her career, AIM FOR PERFECTION ($2.60 TopBetta) comes to town and will be out to make it three from as many starts in Race 5 of the day, a BenchMark 70 over the 1250m. The Mark Newnham-trained galloper won by two on debut before winning just as comfortably in a Class 1 on June 8 ahead of Outback Diva. She won those two races in slick time. The stable have taken their time with the daughter of Smart Missile and it is interesting to note she was unbeaten in five trials prior to her debut. Robbie Dolan claims the 2kg and should be able to possie into a nice position from the barrier.

Race 4

After a series of competitive runs, the Anthony Freedman-trained TIDES ($3.50 TopBetta) can notch up a win in Race 4 of the day at Sandown. The daughter of Fastnet Rock takes on the fellow three-year-old fillies and drops in class after placing in a BenchMark 78 behind Fabric on May 25. On that occasion, she settled handy to the lead and chased well, just behind pipped for runner-up. The stable have elected to apply the blinkers for the first time and she should save plenty of ground from barrier 1.

Race 8

I’m keen on one at each-way odds in the last event of the day at Sandown and that is the Logan McGill-trained GOLD FIELDS ($8.00 TopBetta). The six-year-old resumed in a Saturday class race at Caulfield recently and made up some late ground when 6th behind Bandipur as an outsider over the 1100m. He will be much better suited back in this grade and his second up form reads much better than his first up form with a win and three minor placings from four attempts. He tends to do well with a bit of sting out of the ground, while the 2kg for Jack Martin is also in his favour.
