“The race that stops the nation” is now “The race that stops the world”. 3pm on the first Tuesday in November all eyes will be on Flemington as the gates crash open for the 2 mile event.
The main- event is something to behold and has developed a delicious international flavour. recently dominated by imports this years Cup has a few strong local chances and the punters will be showing their support.
The day itself hasn’t always provided the greatest racing but we have been treated to a fairly strong card that should provide plenty of good betting and viewing. Day two of The Melbourne Cup Carnival, 100,000 plus fans on track and millions watching around the world. There’s no other four minutes like 3pm on the first Tuesday in November.
Race 5: Hawker Hurricane is a fan of this trip, only win is over 1000m and last run will have earned plenty of respect. Cant Be Done is fresh here, has had some impressive jump-outs and has won first up in only attempt. Garner has been very impressive over 1000m, hasn’t missed the quinella yet and should figure here. Worth following at the price ($9 Playup).
Race 6: Jamacian Rain was good when fresh, ran wide and finished off strong. Will come here fitter and is good second up, will enjoy it a little more if it rains too! ($3.90 Playup). Bella Martini hasn’t been at her best, form from ,at spring is more then capable but can she find that? Sweet Scandal won well fresh before finishing third behind Tofane who won on Derby Day to frank that form.
Melbourne Cup- Race 7: Cross Counter comes over with a win over the distance under the belt, will be resuming here but does like it fresh. Mer De Glace was dominant in the Caulfield Cup, had an elite turn of foot and left them in his dust. Showed plenty of staying ability to suggest the trip wont be an issue. 7 wins on the bounce a good draw, huge chance. Finche will be Australia’s best hope of a local win. Chris Waller has the gelding primed here, flew home at Flemington two starts back and wasn’t that far away when going for home at the 200m in Caulfield Cup. Rates well here and comes in under good weight. Prince of Arran was good in Herbert Power before tough Geelong Cup win, may find this harder but placed in Cup last year. Downdraft won well when allowed to take shortest way home on Derby Day, may find this harder-place best chance. Surprise Baby had awesome turn of foot to win here last start, draw hasn’t helped and may need some luck. Constantinople has had a hard time getting his nose in front lately but will give himself every chance again, gets a great weight and is racing well. Vow and Declare was great in Caulfield Cup run, flew home from way back to suggest he will eat the 2 miles. Comes here under a very light weight and is third-up and peaking. Will be right in it and has good value ($11 Playup).
Race 8: Yulong Prince had no luck in Coongy then made up with that with a good Underwood run. Has plenty of potential and if he reaches that he’s every chance. So You Win loves the 1800m and deserves forgiveness for last run. Still hit the line well. Super Titus hasn’t fulfilled his potential as of yet, if he can find the class we think he has he has claims. Junipal chased Vow and Declare to within a nose in only previous run at this trip, won well when beating Greysful Glaomour then just missed Cascading last time. Will take beating ($4.20 Playup).
Race 9: Haunted was commanding last time when scoring, has won up the straight before which is invaluable. Will be every chance in this run and will take a lot of beating. Get on ($4.20 Playup). Parsifal chased Zouturi here and the form out of that has been strong, is racing very well and will be right in the finish. Tactical Advantage didn’t like the valley upon resumption, will enjoy the space of the straight much better here.
