Makybe Diva Stakes: Betting Preview and Tips

Mystic Journey chases an eighth-straight victory when she contests the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Memsie Stakes winner Scales Of Justice also lines up. Veteran Godolphin galloper Hartnell is another key runner along with Yucatan, Humidor and Kings Will Dream.

Firstly, Mystic Journey is unbeaten in two starts at the track and distance having beaten similar opposition, and she showed she’s returned in great order defeating Cliff’s Edge and Hartnell in the PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m).

That form has been franked with Hartnell finishing 1.4 lengths from Scales Of Justice in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m), while 4th placed Sikandarabad wasn’t beaten far by a rampant Homesman in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) at The Valley.

Mystic Journey has plenty of upside and is clearly the one they all have to beat.

As for Kings Will Dream, I thought his effort in the Winx Stakes (1400m) was the best in the race and being first-up after a year-long injury-enforced lay-off, he’s sure to have more upside than most.

I thought his trial was poor leading into that first-up run, and he was always going to take plenty of improvement as well as being suited over a longer trip.

However, after settling around midfield and enjoying the perfect trail in the Winx Stakes, he was a bit flat-footed when Avilius went around him and put him in a pocket as Samadout kicked strongly and held on for the win while Avilius ran home for 4th.

He eased out from behind Avilius at around the 150m mark and took ground off that runner to the line in what was a great return to racing.

Samadoubt and Avilius have franked the form coming 1st and 2nd in the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), and Kings Will Dream should have at least beaten Avilius home with clear running.

Kings Will Dream is yet to miss the placings second-up with a win and two placings from three runs, and he narrowly missed in the Memsie Stakes when second-up last campaign after weaving a passage through the field at Caulfield.

He then went to the Makybe Diva Stakes and finished two lengths 2nd behind Grunt before a 3rd placing behind Winx in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m).

He seemed a bit dour in last year’s Makybe Diva, and I prefer him going to 1600m second-up this time.

In four runs at Flemington, he’s racked up two wins and two placings, and I think he represents great Place value at $4.60 for a horse that hasn’t missed the placings at the track or second-up.
